Box Office - Shubh Mangal Zyada Savdhan and Bhoot - The Haunted Ship work well with their target audience - Sunday updates
Two films belonging to altogether diverse genres, one being a light hearted entertainer telling the story of a homosexual couple and another a horror thriller set on a haunted ship, released over the weekend gone by. Both films featured an actor in the lead role who had a phenomenal 2019. While Ayushmann Khurranna delivered a hat-trick of successes [Article 15, Dream Girl, Bala], Vicky Kaushal roared with an all-time blockbuster Bhoot - The Haunted Ship. However, every film is different and warrants its own returns. This is what happened to the new releases.
As such, the opening weekend of Shubh Mangal Zyada Savdhan [Rs. 32.66 crores] is far lesser than what his last two films, Bala [Rs. 43.95 crores] and Dream Girl [Rs. 44.57 crores], had gathered. Of course these two films were wholesome entertainers and actually catered to a much larger audience base. That was not the case with Shubh Mangal Zyada Savdhan who brought to fore a taboo subject. Though the film was projected as a family film, at the end of the day the number of Rs. 12.03 crores that it gathered on Sunday is the maximum distance one could expect from it.
Ditto for Bhoot - The Haunted Ship which is one of the rare horror films to come out of Bollywood. Even amongst Hollywood imports there are a select films belonging to this genre that find an audience in India and here too the Vicky Kaushal starrer was primarily aiming at the multiplexes. Unlike a regular Bollywood masala Bollywood film which has melodious songs or dance chartbusters as the core ingredients with at least a hint (if not a liberal dose) of sex element in there, Bhoot - The Haunted Ship didn't have any such ingredients out there.
As a result, Sunday brought in Rs. 5.74 crores more which is a good enough number if one looks at such constraints. Currently standing at Rs. 16.36 crores, it would now be aiming at a good hold during the weekdays to help it pull through at the box office.
