4 Best moments from OTT shows in 2020 so far
The age of over-the-top (OTT) media services is upon us, and we have never been happier. Sitting at home in our pyjamas, munching on our favourite snacks, we now have access to millions of shows and movies at our fingertips.
TV shows, in particular, have had an incredible year so far. New releases range from fantasy dramas, historical epics, outrageous comedies, to mind-numbing psychological thrillers. Especially with the lockdown situation, we are deeply grateful to our personal media streaming services keeping us entertained. Never a dull day with an assortment of brilliant shows to choose from. So let's quickly go over some of the stellar releases this year, that had us glued to our screens:-
1. Paatal lok - Amazon Prime
On the receiving end of numerous accolades and almost reverential adoration, is the gripping crime thriller Paatal Lok, streaming exclusively on Amazon Prime. It follows the journey of a low-level police inspector tasked with solving a high profile crime and bringing the criminals to justice.
But not everything is as it seems. As the story unfolds, the gore, violence, intrigue, and satirical-political commentary challenge us to peel our eyes off, but we can't.
One high-intensity scene from the show is when Hathiram Chaudhary and Hathora Tyagi have that final altercation in court, where everything clicks into place, and Tyagi's character development comes full circle. Viewers across the country loved the heartwarming plot addition of how loving a furry friend can save one's life.
If you enjoy crime thrillers and are a sucker for mysteries, this show is right up your alley.
2. Never Have I Ever - Netflix
Comedy's darling Mindy Kaling's flagship project, Never Have I Ever, was a significant hit with Desis. They could relate to the struggles of a young Indian American growing up in the States.
We fall in love with Devi Vishwakumar as she tries to overcome a particularly traumatic event of losing her father. The show offers us a glimpse of how this determined teen navigates the challenges of growing up in America while staying true to her Indian roots.
There are dollops of drama, few heartbreaks, salacious scandals, some apparent stereotypes, and of course, hilarious jokes. One particularly memorable moment is the Puja scene in the show with the gossiping aunties and the "when are you getting married?" quips because no adult Indian can deny that they have been on the receiving end of that question, irrespective of their country of residence.
A high school family drama with an ethnic twist, this is the perfect show to watch with your girlfriends and drool over Paxton Hall-Yoshida's abs, erm, we mean eyes!
3. Money Heist - Netflix
When the second season of the widely acclaimed Spanish TV show Money Heist dropped on Netflix, everybody scrambled to finish it before the internet could haunt them with spoilers. If you thought Season 1 kept you on the edge of your seat, season 2 makes it impossible for you to sit down as you continue to pace in anticipation of the next 'oh my god what' twist!
High-speed chase, an almost impossible rescue mission, a few betrayals and a tragic character death later, we are barely in control of our rapidly beating heart.
If you didn't get slightly teary-eyed when Nairobi and Berlin met again (you know how!), then you might need to get your tear ducts checked. We cannot wait for the next season to find out what new challenge awaits El Profesor.
4. Dark - Netflix
We get it, your head's still spinning from keeping up with this show, which is ten times more complicated than the plot of Inception and Interstellar put together. This German Netflix original first premiered in 2017, as a tale of time travel that was unfolding at an excruciatingly slow pace.
In the small town of Winden, mysterious occurrences push protagonist Jonas Kahnwald to undertake an epic journey through time unknowingly. As Jonas kept joining the dots, the viewers kept getting drawn into the supremely complicated plot.
Our jaws dropped when we found out that Elizabeth Doppler, daughter of Charlotte Doppler, was also her mother. Littered with many such "wait what" moments, this show quickly climbed up the charts and was trending for a very long time. The third and final season marked the end of this epic tale, where 'the end is the beginning, and the beginning is the end'.
Those are some of our favourite moments from the top shows of this year so far, and we cannot wait to see what else this year has in store for us. Till then, happy, binging!
